The place is beautiful and surprising, wonderful and inspiring. The walls are absolutely crambed with collectibles from carousel horses to wombles and much much more. It is like winning the golden ticket to the chocolate factory...

“…a great new space - it’s called Qirkz and is the brainchild of Monsieur Camembert’s Yaron Hallis. It’s a great space – there are places to sit (for those who like to watch), a dance-floor, and ante-room where you can talk. It’s also full of the most amazing objets d’art, bizarre kitsch and all sorts of, well, quirky stuff. Its also BYOG (think of the savings!) and you can bring your own snacks or picnic…a civilised joint, in short.”

Misinterprotato with Froy and Jeremy Rose Quartet

Misinterprotato with Froy Aagre (Norway)

Acclaimed Brisbane based trio Misinterprotato are embarking on one of their most inventive and captivating tours to date collaborating with the stunning sounds of Norwegian Saxophonist/Composer Froy Aagre

The Brisbane trio, comprising Sean Foran (piano), John Parker (drums) and Pat Marchisella (acoustic bass), are developing their work with Aagre whom they met while studying together at the Banff Centre Canada in 2005.

“We found a common interest in music making and a definite appreciation for each others work, and it was just really a matter of time until we could schedule some shows together.”

MisinterprotatoFroy pianist Sean Foran says. “Last year while I was studying in the UK, Froy and I made some plans to record and tour Australia together in 2010. Then we met up in France at the MIDEM Conference in January and it was all go from there.” The tour enables the quartet to give audiences the chance to experience exciting new arrangements and new works written for the ensemble before the group head into the studio in early November.

Misinterprotato continue to soar, with a performance at the MIDEM Conference in France in January 2009, pianist Sean Foran winning the APRA Professional Development Award and their recent album “Variations” being released in the UK in late 2009.

Similarly, Froy Aagre is an emerging star on the European scene. With sold-out performances at the London Jazz Festival, collaborations with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and tours around Scandinavia, Canada, Japan and the UK, Aagre’s enticing lyricism will be a perfect match for the rhythmically exciting interactions of Misinterprotato.

"intelligent and sometimes moodily reflective, but always in touch with their jazz origins. Foran's piano style is brimful of ideas applied equally well to ballads and up-tempo pieces" - 4* The Australian

"Variations, quite simply, is dazzling, building on the band's interests in improvisation, the avant-rock of later Radiohead and the minimalism often associated with European jazz label ECM." - The Courier Mail

There is an unhurried grace in the way Aagre goes about her business, not interested in dazzling you with technique, but beguilling you with melody. - Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise (UK)

JEREMY ROSE QUARTET

Sydney-based saxophonist and composer Jeremy Rose was awarded the 2009 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year, and has been co-leading successful emerging bands The Vampires, The Strides, Compass, as well as working with veteran Australian pianists Mike Nock and Judy Bailey.

..Rose's compositions being more interesting the more they strayed from the jazz tradition. His soprano saxophone playing was especially fluent, melodic and intense… - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald (October 2007)

Jeremy Rose

I consider saxophonist Jeremy Rose to be one of Sydney's most outstanding young composer/bandleaders. - Mike Nock (2007)

The Jeremy Rose Quartet will be previewing music from their release scheduled for November of the Chiba project.

Jeremy Rose (alto + soprano saxophone) Jackson Harrison (piano) Alex Boneham (bass) James Waples (drums)

The music is indicative of Rose’s broad influences and experiences, drawing on the lyricism of Bill Frisell and the harmonic language of Wayne Shorter. His melodic compositions invite the players to a common meeting point between individual and group improvisation. When compared to Rose’s other projects, such as the groove-based Vampires or the highly composed music of Compass, Chiba has a contemporary jazz focus which allows the four musicians to explore their background of jazz and creative music. Guitarist Kim Johannesen’s playing is a highlight of the group, with a broad palette of sounds and ideas, contributing some of the finest solo moments.

What next

This week I am in Adelaide for the Come Out Children's Festival, a fantastic children's festival that is a leader in Australia for valuing and presenting work expressly made for children from ages 1-16 ish.

It makes me envious that we don't have something like this in Sydney. However I am going to work away at presenting work for children.

Mark Isaacs Resurgence Band

Next gig is Wednesday 20 May @ the Factory. Should be a great night with album launch for Mark's new album.

The intensity of the collective belief in the project was evident immediately, the leader’s first solo having an almost frightening intensity to it, while still exuding a tangible and effecting beauty… This band must be heard – John Shand, SMH.

Isaacs, with every release, has refined his systematic approach to post-modernity jazz to the point that his sound defines what jazz should sound like at the advent of the 21st Century – All About Jazz (USA).

The Mark Isaacs Resurgence Band was formed in 2007 and have toured extensively in Australia and Asia, performing at the 2007 Queensland Music Festival followed by appearances in Japan at the Sapporo Jazz Festival and the Ikspiari jazz club in Tokyo as well as Thailand and the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.

Expect to hear the band perform a new repertoire of compositions for quintet to accompany the release of their new CD Tell it Like it is and a national tour

Mark Isaacs led his Resurgence band through an all-new original repertoire that coaxed some superb playing from all five musicians – The Age (Melbourne).

Mark Isaacs (piano) James Muller (guitar) Matt Keegan (sax) Brett Hirst (bass) Tim Firth (drums)

places and spaces - Judy Baileys Jazz Connection

This was a trial with a morning coffee concert, but in hindsight I think we should have done a tea dance, which we are now mulling over for the future. It was definitely toe tapping music and has great potential to bring back that dance hall style to this music.
